Old Man Winter is starting to blow on Newfoundland…no real frost yet, surprisingly, but consistently cool and windy. With all the recent rain, no more beds were put in, but I have more than enough ready to get going in the spring. As early as possible, they will be planted with spinach, radishes, beets, lettuces, kale, carrots, chard, onions, and maybe even some flowers. If you have any favorite vegetables or varieties you’d like to see at the market, send me a note and I’ll see if I can fit it into the rotation.

The electric fence is finished…no electricity to it yet, waiting for a part, but so far, its keeping the moose out without electricity…if they’re still around. They ate quite a few of the overwintering onions, who knew they’d like them? Research done here in Newfoundland has found an electric fence is very effective at keeping moose out of vegetable plots. And I don’t want to take any chances…a moose could wipe out hundreds of dollars worth of produce, if not more, in a night.
A pipe carrying water to the meadow was installed too! I’ll have lots of water for irrigation next year, if I need it! The Farmer’s Almanac is calling for a wetter than normal summer. I’m afraid to find out what “rainier than normal” looks like here! This past summer was beautiful, but I was assured that that was not normal.

I still have an old hoophouse to put up, and are waiting on word to see if we are getting the funds for a couple more. Those will go up over the winter, which I’m sure will be delightful work!
